Mobile health and medical applications (“apps”) are apps you can
put on your smartphone. These apps can be used for many
reasons. They help track your eating habits, physical activity, test
results, or other information. Just like websites, anyone can develop these
apps. Make sure you know who made the app you are looking to use. There are
apps that connect you to your online health portal and those used by third
parties.
When you download an app it may ask for personal information
including your location, e-mail, birthday and other identifying information.
Ask yourself if the information they are collecting is necessary to use the
app. If it is a third party app ask yourself if they really need the information, and
why. You need to protect your personal information and not give it out
unnecessarily. Apps that connect you to your doctor may be more
secure than those that don’t.
