Basic computer information



Listed below are some useful terms and information on computer basics to help you get started on your online health journey.

Internet service providers:  These are the companies that provide you with internet service at your home, office or on mobile devices. There are several options for internet service and they differ by location.

  • Dial-Up is inexpensive, but slow.  
  • Cable and fiber offer the fastest speeds
  • Wireless and satellite are slower and cost more.
  • Cellular is convenient when you are away from home.
Modems: A modem is a box like device which connects you to your source of internet. A different modem is required for each service provider. Modems are usually rented from your internet service provider.

Routers:  
A Routers connects to a modem and creates a private network in a home or office. When you connect a device to wi-fi, it connects to a local router.

Web browsers:  Web browsers take the information from a website, which is written in code, and interprets the code and displays it as a web-page you view. There are several web browsers.  Some website require you to use a certain browser to view the page.  Here is a list of the most popular:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge


"The cloud" is a term used to describe online storage. If your information is stored in "the cloud", it is kept in a computer somewhere else in the world, rather than on your personal computer.
